Clubs and Societies
There are over 75 active sports Clubs and Societies within the Students’ Union, ranging from American Football to Waterpolo, from Afro-Caribbean Society to Shopping. For an up to date list of all the clubs and societies, check out the Activities button on the Students’ Union website www.tees-su.org.uk. The Activities & Skills Centre (ASC) on the first floor of the Students’ Union building supports all Clubs and Societies and you can find their contact details at the bottom of this page.
Taking Part
Getting involved in a club or society couldn’t be easier. There are club and society days during Welcome (the annual fortnight at the start of the year designed to welcome both new and returning students) where the top floor of the Students’ Union is taken over with stalls letting you know what each club or society gets up to. Once you’ve decided which ones you wish to join, simply go to the main Reception on the first floor of the Students’ Union, fill in a form and pay your membership fee. Don’t worry if you miss out in Welcome, you can join a club or society at any point during the year. Take a look at the poster boards opposite the Advice Centre and Student Job Centre for more information.
Taking charge
Each club or society is run by an annually elected committee of 3 students, comprising Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. Each of these committee members has different responsibilities, but collectively, they organise all the activities. The ASC supports all clubs and societies and can give you further details on these 3 positions. Individual clubs and societies may have additional posts available such as social secretaries and team managers. Contact the clubs and societies directly for information about these through their page on the Students’ Union website www.tees-su.org.uk
Don’t see what you want to do?
If the club or society you are interested in does not exist, why not set up a new one? All you need are 10 students who are also interested in your club/society to have a meeting to elect a committee. The ASC would organise this for you, so get in touch with them if you would like more information
Athletic
All clubs are represented at this forum, where issues relating specifically to clubs are discussed. The meetings are held monthly and chaired by an annually elected club representative. It is the responsibility of the club committee to send someone to these meetings, but all club members are welcome to attend. From Athletic Union, sub committees are elected to discuss very specific issues:
Sports Committee – 5 students who allocate the funds available for clubs to spend on their activities. They meet twice a year to review grant allocation forms.
Athletic Union Tour Committee – Every year, the Athletic Union takes part in a European Tour. Each club involved in this is eligible to send a representative to these meetings, which discuss the organisation of tour.
Sports Awards Committee – The Annual Awards Dinner is held to recognise the achievements of all student volunteers. There are specific awards available for clubs and their members, and it is down to sports awards committee to decide the winners. 5 students are elected in April each year to sit on one committee meeting to discuss the various nominations and pick who goes home with the trophy.

Volunteer Drivers
The Students’ Union hires minibuses for use by clubs and societies for their activities, but we need people to drive them. The Activities and Skills Centre provides Driver Training sessions for any club/society members who wish to volunteer, either for their own club/society exclusively, or as part of a wider pool. As a volunteer driver, you get the chance to interact with other clubs and societies.
