► Volunteering

There are a number of ways in which you can volunteer within your Students’ Union. Volunteering is a lot of fun, a great way to meet new people and make new friends and it looks great on your CV. The Activities Centre (AC) on the first floor of the Students’ Union building supports all Volunteering activities and you can find their contact details at the bottom of this page.

Raise and Give (RAG)

RAG gives students the opportunity to raise money for charities and good causes. The Students’ Union runs 2 annual RAG weeks, plus other one off activities throughout the year. RAG is organised by the RAG Committee, which is made up of an annually elected Chair and Vice Chair and supporting committee members. There are no rules when it comes to RAG; each committee chooses its own charities and events, in consultation with the Activities Centre (AC).

Student Community Action (SCA)

SCA is all about giving something back to the local community and the Students’ Union supports volunteers to run numerous events throughout the year, aimed at improving the lives of local people. SCA is organised by the SCA Committee, which is made up of an annually elected Chair and supporting committee members. Previous events have included a Senior Citizens’ Christmas party, “changing rooms” style community makeover in a school and Special Olympics athlete coaching. SCA is very hands on, a good laugh and extremely rewarding.

Media and Marketing Assistants (M&Ms)

Media volunteers work closely with the Communications Officer and Marketing Manager on a variety of projects including publications such as the Students’ Union’s monthly newspaper, P.T.O., the Annual Report and Student Guide Book. There are opportunities available in editing, designing, writing, photography and marketing, as well as future possibilities with the Student Radio Station, currently being established by the University, as a presenter or technician. The full programme of marketing volunteer opportunities includes market research in the form of focus groups, mystery shopper exercises and surveys as well as opportunities to get directly involved in devising campaigns and strategies to promote services, events and facilities available from the Students’ Union. The M&M opportunity is a fantastic way to develop skills and experience sought after in the competitive worlds of media and marketing, whilst meeting a range of new people and getting your name known.

Welcome Reps

What better way to start the year than to get involved in Welcome? Welcome is the annual fortnight at the start of the year designed to welcome both new and returning students and is packed full of activities and information. Welcome Reps roll up their sleeves and help out with publicity, the Welcome Ballot and each day’s events. However, this role is about much, much more…. Welcome Reps are needed to get out and make students feel comfortable at Teesside. Whether that’s taking some first years for a drink in the Terrace Bar or showing them where to get their NUS Extra card, it’s just as much fun as being a holiday rep – though we can’t guarantee the sunshine!

Student Trainers

The Skills Programme is designed to develop academic, employment and personal skills. It is run by the ASC and comprises over 40 sessions a year, each led by Student Trainers. The role of Student Trainer can vary from simply delivering a session to a group of students, to developing new material. Being a Student Trainer can enhance your own CV, whilst improving your confidence and giving you the chance to try something completely different.

Give It A Go Reps

Give It A Go is a series of one-off taster sessions, run through the ASC. Ranging from abseiling to ice skating, from aromatherapy to paintballing, there is something for everybody and the best thing is there’s no long term commitment required. Give It A Go reps are there to lead each session and to make sure everything is safe, but still fun. As with the programme itself, Give It A Go reps will not need to make a long term commitment but you will get a discount on any session that you lead.
