► Making Decisions

Teesside University StudentsUnion is a democratic organisation run by students for students. The day to day running of the organisation is handled by a team of experienced permanent staff but it is students who take the big decisions about the way the Students’ Union is run and the issues upon which it focuses.

How to get involved in making decisions:

    • Sabbatical Officers

These are full-time, paid positions, which are elected annually by current students at the University of Teesside and its franchise colleges. As trustees of the Students’ Union, they have a host of responsibilities and opportunities related to their particular portfolio. Sabbatical Officers either take a year out from, or have just completed their studies and may stand for a maximum of 2 years. Elections take place in March each year and the position commences in the following July.

    • Part-Time Executive Officers

These are part-time, unpaid positions, filled by current students alongside their course. Working with the Sabbatical Officers, they make up the Executive Committee, which acts on the decisions made by students. There is no restriction on the number of times you may be a Part-Time Executive Officer, but the posts last for 1 year at a time. Elections take place in March and these posts commence in the final term of each academic year.

    • Union Senate

This is the main decision making body of the Students’ Union and meets on a monthly basis to debate issues and motions put forward by students. It is made up of many different volunteer group representatives, though any current student at the University of Teesside is able to attend. There are 2 positions, which are elected each year, to organise and support Union Senate; Chair of Union Senate, responsible for running and promoting each meeting and Deputy Chair, responsible for supporting the chair and deputising in their absence.

    • Committees

There are 2 committees elected at Union Senate (although other groups may be formed as and when required), which have specific remits. These are currently; Elections Committee, and Finance Committee. Elections Committee organises and promotes any elections within the Students’ Union. The Finance Committee scrutinises the Students’ Union finances and proposes the annual budget, with advice from Students’ Union permanent staff.
