It provides an alternative to our hugely popular Terrace Bar for students to relax and socialise through the day then enjoy club nights and other entertainment on evenings.
Stephen Dowson, President of the Students’ Union said: “I’m absolutely delighted with this recognition; it’s a fantastic vindication of the changes we have made with the help of the University to our facilities for students. It’s also a much deserved complement for all of the permanent and student staff who work so hard year round to ensure students can relax and socialise in safe, responsibly run venues.”

Quality Marks and Membership
Teesside University Students' Union is an Investor in People, a national award recognising quality in the running of the organisation and development of staff and volunteers. In 2004 the Students' Union committed to achieve the award of Investors in Excellence, a new national accreditation for organisations who are serious about continuos improvement at all levels. We have maintained the same high standards ever since having been reaccredited twice.
The Students' Union was also amongst the first cohort of Students' Unions who participated in the Students' Union Evaluation Initiative (SUEI) a nationally recognised new quality mark which allows Students’ Unions to evaluate their services, facilities and events for students against a set of strict criteria set by leading figures in the Students’ Union movement. A two year project, it saw Trustees and staff at the Students’ Union act on suggestions for improvement from distinguished SUEI assessors and provide evidence of our many strengths against the criteria they set.
Tommy Cawkwell, President of the Students’ Union said: “We’re delighted to receive a quality mark which is increasingly sought after by Students’ Unions up and down the country despite only being in existence a couple of years. It’s a testament to the high quality of everything we were already doing and the improvements that both current and past Trustees and Staff have made, that we’re amongst the first handful of Students’ Unions in the country to receive it."
The panel were particularly impressed with the improvements the Students’ Union had made in building links with an ever more diverse student population in recent years as well the overall quality and ongoing development of all our support services for students.
Tommy Cawkwell added: “It’s all fantastic news and shows that the Students’ Union is at the heart of the University campus and student life both as a physical space and a service.”
